    Nation wide Hot Tap service
Hot Taps, Hot tapping and Line Stops

American Piping Services, Inc. (APS), began Hot Tapping and Line Stopping services in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1999. We saw a need for a skilled and reliable 24-hour service in a town that works all day and night.  APS is trained in all areas of Wet Tapping, Line Stopping and Pipe Freezing procedures. We take pride in a continuous safe and reliable service record.

Let APS make repairs or modify your pressurized system while allowing uninterrupted service. American Piping Services has over 50 years of accumulated experience, Each of our qualified staff will assist you by recommending safe and effective solutions that suit your needs. Year after year APS has grown to better serve the needs of Industrial, Commercial and Municipal Industries in Nevada and surrounding States.
Valve Insertion, Pipeline Bypassing, Adding new valves without interruption of service, Under pressure repairs or modifications, no shutdowns.  Need a
Thermowell coupling?  Need a vacuum or pressure  vacuum gauge or sight glass?  Bolt on Hot Tap fittings,  Leak repairs, and welding repairs, pipe wraps, nozzle flanges, welded pipe fittings.  Hot taps for pipe diameters 1/2" thru 72"

Hot/Wet Tapping

Hot/Wet Tapping will allow you to make a branch connection on your pressurized pipelines or vessels without shutdowns or interruption of service. Hot taps can be performed and completed by using the proper fitting for your pipeline application.

Hot Taps / Wet Tapping

The Capabilities of a Hot Tap

    • A hot tap can be done on virtually any size of pipe.  The cut size can range from ˝” to 60” diameter.
    • Hot tapping can be performed on systems that run at very high pressures—up to 1400 psig
    • Hot taps can be done on systems that operate at temperatures as high as 700 degrees Fahrenheit.

    The Advantages of Hot Tapping

    • Hot taps do not require interruptions to customers and industry.
    • Hot tapping minimises the risk of discolouration incidents.
    • Hot tapping eliminates drain down time and any associated waste problems.
    • Hot tapping gives the water company an improved public perception.
    • Hot taps reduce the amount of customer complaints.
    • Using the hot tapping method eliminates the need to give customers warning of an outage.
    • Hot tapping reduces the risk of contamination because the system is not depressurized.

The basic steps of Hot Tapping

Typically, hot taps require the use of a tapping fitting, an isolation valve, and hot tapping machine. The tapping fitting is securely attached to the system pipe to be cut.  The isolation valve (which allows the hole saw or cutter to advance into the pipe without allowing pipe contents to escape) and hot tapping machine are the placed.  Then the valve assembly can be pressure tested to check for any problems before making a cut.

The hole saw (cutter) is moved past the open valve, to the pipe.  The cut begins and the cutter advances through the pipe wall. Upon completion of the cut, the cutter is withdrawn to just past the gate of the valve. When the valve is securely closed the cutter is removed.  The coupon (chunk of pipe that is cut loose) is retained by the use of a pilot drill that is wired.  The wire is designed so that, once through the coupon the wire toggles.  In this way the coupon can be easily removed.

    Types of Connections

  • Elbow taps
  • Angle taps
  • Perpendicular to the pipe

A hot tap (also known as a wet tap or underpressure drilling) is the method cutting a hole in a pressurized, in-service system without any interruption of service to the system.  This is typically done in order to make a branch connection from a live pipeline or when a devise must be placed into the flow stream.  It is also the first step to making a line stop (or line plug). Underpressure drilling can be used on any pipe material including cast iron, ductile iron, steel, PE, PVC, asbestos cement and PSCP.  Hot tapping can be safely performed even on highly pressurized systems.  In the case that the pipe material can not be welded APS is equipped to meet your needs with mechanical fittings.
